Keep your goals in mind

Why have you decided to create a video resume? What are your objectives? What message do you want to convey? You need to keep that in mind when you build the structure of your video resume. Use bullet points to organise your ideas and develop each of them in order to know exactly what you are going to say once you are in front of the camera. It is important that you are consistent throughout your speech so you don’t lose the recruiter’s attention.

1. Keep it short

Recruiters don’t have much time so you need to go straight to the point. Your video shouldn’t be more than two minutes so you don’t lose people’s interest. Take your time to organise your ideas wisely within the 1-2 minutes to be able to communicate the important information in a smooth and quick manner.

2. Have something to say

A video resume shouldn’t be a replica of your CV. It has to bring something more than what is written on your resume. A video is less constraining and enables you to take more liberties so you should take advantage of it. Introduce yourself, develop your most relevant experiences and explain what kind of job you are looking for and why companies should call you.

3. Be original and interesting

Creating a video resume can be strategic if you are a creative person who has some multimedia knowledge. You should definitely go for it if you have an original idea. Talk about it to your friends and colleagues to gauge their reactions and if they are positive then start working on it! You need to think of something unusual that will make people want to talk about it. The more it is shared, the more chances you have to get noticed by recruiters.

4. Stay professional

While being original is one of the main criteria of a video resume, it is strongly advised to stay professional. Be dressed and behave like if you were going to a meet the recruiter in person. You want to make a good first impression and it is achieved through an appropriate outfit and a professional behaviour. What you want is to convince the employer you are the right person to work in his company.
