SALES POSITIONS

Key Qualities

According to Vincent who recruits sales professionals for fashion brands in Western Europe, a product sensibility is essential. You need to know and like the products you sell and promoting them has to be something you enjoy. Advising someone on what to wear and how to wear it requires creativity and imagination. A sales person loves fashion and has a predisposition for it. This is hardly something you learn and more something innate. A good relational is also required. You will spend your days interacting with people so you better like it. You will probably have a bubbly personality and inspire confidence.

It’s for you if …

You follow the trends on a daily basis and fashion is one of your interests.
You are a hard worker and don’t count your hours. Being a sales consultant can be tough and tiring. We might be asked to stay longer from time to time to reach your targets.
You are tenacious and target-driven. You will have to show your ability and make your way in a competitive environment. Besides, some months can be tough and you will always be under pressure to attain your monthly objectives.

A few tips

Do not wait to have an interview to start paying attention to what is going on in fashion. Stay updated on the latest trends and know the brands well.
Working for a luxury brand implies a certain attitude. You have to be well educated, always look well and have a passion of excellence.

SALES MANAGEMENT POSITIONS

Key Qualities

We asked to Elodie who recruits sales managers for fashion and luxury brands what the key qualities were. In her opinion, being a good listener and having a customer service awareness is the most important. Having a strong personality is also mandatory as you will have to manage people with strong personalities. You need to be able to supervise and motivate them. For that reason, we don’t get thrown off balance.
Everyone can’t be a manager and it’s essential to have the management streak. People who don’t have the personality for it or the skills required for this job won’t get this role even if they are very good sales consultants. A manager can have fewer years’ experience than some sales assistants he manages just because he has what it takes.

It’s for you if …

You are a hard worker and don’t count your hours. You will have double pressure as you will have to make sure your sales assistants reach their individual targets and you reach yours. Being a manager means more responsibilities and additional stress you have to handle.
You already have an experience in fashion. Companies usually hire people with relevant experience as the way of working in fashion is very specific.

A few tips

Be interested in your company’s commercial policy and be target-driven. Wanting your shop to be the best one in terms of revenue and making a point to overcome your monthly target will make you stand out from the crowd.
Do not favour the numbers at the expense of the human interactions. You need to have good relationships with your colleagues to show that you can be a good manager. You have to find the good balance between both.

It’s for you if …

You accept to start at the bottom and climb your way up. Most people who hold a managing position have an experience in retail. Being on the field enables them to understand the customer relationship and see the impact of the actions they take.
Not having a lot of liberty is not a problem for you. Everything is well structured and even if they like employees to suggest ideas, there isn’t a lot of room for manoeuvre.

A few tips

Show your interest for the brand and do not hesitate to go the extra mile for it if you think it’s worth it. That can be going to the shops to get to know the products, talk with the sales people to learn more about the brand, stay updated on the latest news…
